Applying at the consulate

The non-lucrative visa must be requested in person at the Spanish consulate for your state of residence — New York, Washington DC, Miami, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston or San Juan (Puerto Rico). You will need proof of funds, private Spanish health insurance, a medical certificate and the FBI Identity History Summary (background check), apostilled by the US Department of State. US health plans and Medicare are not accepted for a Spanish residence visa — you need private Spanish health insurance with no copays.
