US consulate or filing from Spain?

Applying through the Spanish consulate for your state of residence — New York, Washington DC, Miami, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston or San Juan (Puerto Rico) gives you a one-year visa; you then apply for your TIE card in Spain. Filing from Spain — while you are there legally as a visitor — goes to the UGE and gives a residence permit of up to three years directly. Documents such as the FBI Identity History Summary (background check) must be apostilled by the US Department of State and translated by a sworn translator.

Before you apply

Your employer or clients must be outside Spain and your work history, qualifications and income must be documented. We check the FBI Identity History Summary (background check), apostille, translations and insurance requirements for your filing route before you pay for a full application. Government and third-party charges are separate from our fee.

What happens after approval?

Once in Spain, you may need a fingerprints appointment and a TIE card. We explain the next administrative steps and do not promise a visa decision or a consular appointment date.
